A few of my favourite things

19 12 2007

I’m completely caught up in this frenzy of list making. It’s a combination of just having read High Fidelity (thanks Textual Healing) and the time of year that’s in it. The music ones are all done and dusted but that’s not to say that valuable time hasn’t been spent on others such as The 5 Most Annoying Neighbours of 2007,  The 37 Tastiest Vegetables of the Year, The 11 Most Exciting Thursday Afternoons of the Year,  The 14 Happiest Llamas …there really is no end to the amount of fun you can have with this.

I have one very last list to share though. It’s not really a ‘best of’ or ‘favourites’ but seeing as blogging all but took over my life in 2007 this one seems of more interest than the llamas (although number seven on that particular list would have surely had you laughing all the way to March of next year).

I have read many many great blogs this year. Every single blog linked over on the right is a blog I read regularly and love. I thought it would be interesting to re-visit some of the posts that I particularly liked - each for different reasons. I hope you enjoy them too! Oh and I loved many others from other bloggers so this is far from a comprehensive list – I don’t want to upset anyone who didn’t get a mention.

All Round Newbie – Counting

Following a little in the tradition of High Fidelity, Newbie lists her ex-boyfriends here. She has since met someone special who sounds really wonderful so I’m happy out the door for her.

For The Long Run – Last Impressions

I won’t say anything about this post apart from the fact that it is the most beautiful thing I have read all year. Incredibly touching and wonderfully valuable.

La Vespita, Herself – I lick my Cheese

What could be worse that neighbours from hell? Housemates from hell! And La Vespita has had some of the strangest – I had sore sides from laughing so much after reading this.

Primal Sneeze – Incredulous Internments

Of course Primal writes superb posts practically daily so it was inevitable he’d be cocking his head up around here. He has a knack of being funny, thought provoking and poignant all at the same time. It baffles me when I read some of the very popular Irish bloggers who just moan and complain about everything and are deemed talented. In my opinion they aren’t -Primal is – he has it all. His description of funerals in this post showcase his talents wonderfully.

Mommy Has a Headache – There must be fifty ways to kill your mother

It’s no small wonder that Mommy isn’t locked away today writing a prison diary after the murder accidental death of her mother. If she was in prison she’d be running the place in a week. She’d have prisoners and wardens enthralled with her stories. The first time I came to her blog she had posted a video clip of herself drinking gin – I was hooked.

Adventures of Tallulahbloom and Reginald Perrin – Smoke and Mirrors

Who could have thought that the results of Tallulah’s quest for a new Winter coat would result in me almost wetting myself? It also made me feel very sorry for Mr Rigby :-)

Three Dog Blog – When there are twelve people in your family, birthdays are a big deal

Laurie’s posts are gentle and profound. She writes about every day things - about humanity. She has made me tear up and stare out the window deep in thought on many occasions. She has subtle brilliance and it’s been a joy to discover. This post is like sneeking a peek of a family through a crack in the curtains. It has everything that I love about her writing.

Mommy Has a Headache – I am Belle de Jour

I know this is mad greedy – here she is again! This story is about Mommy’s job as a personal assistant to a French dominatrix in London. It is completely enthralling – like nothing you’ve read all year.

The Spanish Exposition – Rosie’s Top Ten Tipples

This is a much better than my idea of Top Ten Nipples of the year. In fact this is my favourite year-end list! Reading it just really makes me want to go out on the town with her – truly fabulous stuff.

There really are so many incredibly talented bloggers out there – it astonishes me and overwhelms me at times – I can’t think of it too long or I’d never write anything again for fear of inadequacy. This is really just a slice of what I’ve come across this year. Like I said, all blogs listed to the right here are worth checking out so I would urge you to take a look in between your Turkey leftovers and fourteenth glass of Baileys – or should that be Campari and Orange Juice?

I’m heading off to the homeland tomorrow at a totally unrespectable hour. If I can tear myself away from my seven thousand sisters I’ll try and make it to a computer every now and then. Until then have lots and lots of Christmas cheer and festive fun.

I am holding you solely responsible for my lack of productivity for the rest of the day! ;)

Safe trip home and enjoy your first chocolate Kimberley… that first one is always the best.

The Textual Healer

To think that one casual remark can spark such an outpouring of briliant writing. Cheers. Much good reading to be had from these over the Chistmas break. Have a good time back home.

Primal Sneeze

He has a knack of being funny, thought provoking and poignant all at the same time me arse!

But thanks very many anyway.

ps. It’s Sneeze by the way. The Screams are just neighbours of mine – no relation.

g’way with your modesty, Primal. thanks for the endorsement, Conor. it’s high and very welcome praise coming from a man with such keen interest in music, booze and nipples. if you’re in Dublin at all over the holidays i’d love to bring you out and get you rat-arsed.

no dancing though. i’m allergic.

Caro and Rosie’s posts were two of my favourites this year too so I’ll take your suggestions and have a gander at the others too. What a nice way to find new blogs.

Thanks for the plaudit, Conor. Now I’ll have to do the polite thing and read everyone else’s blog. You sadist you! (On the other hand, what better way to drift through the Christmas break when all the TV films are crap and I’m landed with a pile of duff books that looked ever so enthralling in the bookshop). And plaudit reciprocated – I love reading your blog too, you have a wicked sense of humour which seems to turn everyday occurences into magical experiences. Genius!

Dearest, I am honored by two mentions. I had taken the murder post down until I read this post and now I have put it up again. My mother wrote to me the other day and said I should stop writing my ‘obscene’ blog. I am still not sure whether she ever read that post about me murdering her. I think maybe she did and I am not sure why she is still talking to me. I suppose blood is thicker than water, eh?

nick – you’re too kind – I hope you have a wonderful time reading lots of wonderful blogs and books – It’s so nice to have the time to do so – that’s what I’m looking forward to

emma – wow, I’m glad it’s back where it belongs! – and your gin hangover is another reason why I love you hehe

caro – well selfishly I am glad you had to go through it all because it made for such good reading :-) Happy christmas to you too!

What! This is just what I need! More blogs to become addicted to! Anyone would think I’m currently unemployed or something and have nothing better to do with my time than surf the net all day reading witty and intelligent musings. Oh, wait a minute, that’s precisely my current situation. Hurray for more blog recommedations! Cheers Conor :-)

Conorzie, sowwy I haven’t been around the last few days and realized I missed reading your madness (said most affectionately).
Whaddaya say; after the Christmas food is digested and all the presents are open, those who didn’t give you the pressie you wanted are all beaten up, and before the NYE (that’s when I get to fly home for a short surprise visit), would you like to catch up and meet “real life – like”?
Wishing you a stupendous Christmas and brilliant New Year!
Loads of love, hugs and kisses (cyberspace or not)
Gx

Lakota Princess

In complete awe of your ability to remember all that. Of course with seven thousand sisters I assume you’ve had lots of practice remembering shit, like names, posts, antedotes, etc. Do you have to keep a list of all the lists?
Adding you to MY list of kewl blogs.

Here I was, catching up on my blog reading after a month in the working/holiday wilderness, when I find that I am mentioned in such a nice way. Thanks for remembering my post. (The direct link is – http://forthelongrun.blogspot.com/2007/06/last-impressions.html – my blogger template is maybe non-intuitive, clicking on the time stamp gives the direct link.)

Thanks to your suggestion, I’ve done a best/worst reads of 2007 list. Check it out sometime. :)
