I want to be Bob Dylan

15 03 2008

Everyone’s reforming these days Pixies, Led Zeppelin and um ….Boyzone (god help us all). Never one to miss a fashionable bandwagon I thought to myself maybe it’s time that I reformed too. For you see, I was once an international rock megastar with thousands of adoring fans. Well by megastar I mean that a friend taught me four chords on the guitar one drunken night at university and by thousands of adoring fans I mean my occasionally giddy sister actually had a favourite song of mine! The peak of my short musical career however was when my mother told me to take my guitar and songs upstairs out of her way - she actually referred to them as songs. Real songs - I had clearly made it. It was alas, downhill from there - I could never quite reach those dizzy heights again. At least I knew when to stop though and left in a flicker of glory.

But now, as I watch everyone and their llama getting back together I think maybe it’s time for me to pick up that dusty guitar, relearn those four chords and take the world by storm. To celebrate this momentous occasion I am giving away my Greatest Hits collection free of charge here on this very blog. Don’t let the fact that it’s comprised of only one song and not even a Conortje original but a Neil Young cover put you off. Commemorative T-Shirts, World tours and annoyed mothers surely beckon. The time is now! So without further adon’t - here is …….

Can’t wait to hear the Conortje take on ‘Barstool Blues’. Put me down for one T-shirt.

That’s really you? For reals? You can sing! You don’t look like you can sing.

My judgement: I love that song and your rendition does not offend me. This is high praise.

conortje (13:55:18) :

robin - fabulous! Now, just need someone to make the t-shirts…

gimme - I don’t look like I can sing?? What do I look like I can do I wonder… I’m glad I didn’t offend :-)

I’m very impressed. I’m not surprised you can sing though - seems like all the Irish can sing. I was so relieved that I could play the fiddle instead of sing for me “party piece” since I cannot sing. At all. Like it’s bad enough that people would, in fact, point and laugh if I attempted it.

that’s gorgeous, Conor.

Wow. You have a really lovely voice. Really really lovely.

I’m putting this on my iPod. There’s no higher praise than that.

Caro: there is. Mr Young’s legal representatives could initiate legal action for breach of copyright.

travelling but not in love (02:23:39) :

OK, stop showing off now. Seriously, it’s good and sad and you have a lovely singing voice, so you do. Not sure whether Ann was being ironic or not, but maybe it is your ‘Irish genes’ a-showing….ha ha.

Do you remember there used to be a massive poster at Dublin Airport, just before Arrivals that said ‘Welcome to the Boyzone’.

It got me quite excited until I realised it was just advertising those dancing fools, and not welcoming me to some kind of gay paradise (as if…).

Just beautiful, Conor. Wish I could sing but all I’ve got is a caterwaul that can smash glasses.

You made it many times before actually - it was just that someone else made it better - bad timing that’s all. Mo Rogha is not about link-love, it’s about the best.

Tom Grasty (13:37:50) :

Your angle about groups reforming is interesting. I guess Dylan reforms every night. And while you didn’t refer to him specifically in your post, clearly you must be a fan. Hope so anyway. So I thought I’d introduce you to my new novel, BLOOD ON THE TRACKS, which I think you’d enjoy.

It’s a murder-mystery. But not just any rock superstar is knocking on heaven’s door. The murdered rock legend is none other than Bob Dorian, an enigmatic, obtuse, inscrutable, well, you get the picture…

Suspects? Tons of them. The only problem is they’re all characters in Bob’s songs.

You can get a copy on Amazon.com or go “behind the tracks” at http://www.bloodonthetracksnovel.com to learn more about the book.

Very impressive. As Caro says, a really lovely voice. You should think seriously about the career possibilities. Where’re all those influential agents when you need them?

Catherine (22:12:20) :

Holy moly Conor! I have goosebumps here. So so so lovely.

nick - I could do with a career change as it happens ….

catherine - aw thanks. I think the novelty would die very quickly if it became a series hehe

emmak - Sadly I’m not - I’m a thirty-nothing for another couple of months
