I am always weary of putting photos on WordPress as in the past they’d end up mysteriously moving about the page at random, scared of the cursor, obscuring words and generally going places and doing things they shouldn’t. I’m not sure if they’ve fixed this problem but we’ll soon see…
So amid an avalanche of pressure (as in someone mentioned in passing they wouldn’t mind seeing my attempt-a-beard) I’ve decided to present my current facial hair to the world. It’s a week and a half old now which, in Conortje years, is the equivalent of about three days on a ‘normal’ man. Strangely, in real life not even one person has actually commented at all on it which makes me worry that it is some sort of reverse Emperor’s New Clothes. That, or they’re all sweetly trying to protect my feelings.
So I practised and practised for hours and took lots and lots of photos until I got one that looked suitably beardy I very casually lifted up my camera and took a quick random shot which resulted in this
Worried that I’d be branded as a posing tosspot for the rest of my life I decided to try and learn to smile. This is easier said than done and I ended up with some sort of grimace-style smuggish grin and unusual bug eyes.
And just in case anyone doubted the uniqueness of my beard hair growth this is why I’ll never sport dashing sideburns
Now that I have presented photographic evidence, the question is do I shave and return to normality or keep going with this beardalicious experiment. Can my life get any more exciting I wonder?

keep it up, it looks good!
[sighs, wishes you weren't immune to her charms]
keep it, keep it! but maybe ditch the vest…..ha ha
So amid an avalanche of pressure (as in someone mentioned in passing they wouldn’t mind seeing my attempt-a-beard)
Now I feel bad.
I can’t see where the beard is “patchy”. I like it. I know other guys with patchy beards that grow slowly and they are afraid of growing beards too. But I like it.
Also: beautiful eyes.
Smokin’! I think the first one should be your debut album cover.
I like the posing tosspot shot. And I’m a big fan of the vest! You look great!
Having generally poured scorn on the beard thing, actually your beard looks great, really suits you! You look SO wise and handsome and cool in the first pic. Why aren’t all those unattached men homing in? And a week and a half’s not long. Mine took months and months to grow to a decent length.
rosie – immune? of course I’m not
travelling – hehe as in you don’t like it or I should be topless?
lenfercest – you’re too kind. The last picture is an example of the patchiness!
catherine – and it’d be in the bargain bins within a week hehe
jovica – so that’s one for the vest and for against hehe. Tallulahbloom said it like an old fashioned swimming costume hehe
Nick – thank you very much
Maybe I should only come out at that time in the evening when the sun is low and casting that gorgeous golden light! As for the all the eligible men – beats me hehe (and I really wanted to make a joke about homo-ing in but decided it was in poor taste hehe)
I like it. you look good. My boyf has similar coverage to you, it kind of fills in as he goes along. keep up the good work.
ha ha….it’s whichever you want it to be, Big C……
I just like the beard more than the vest. And I really like the beard.
Nice. Needs more time though. Think bushy thoughts.
Keep the beard. Makes you even foxier.
How cool is your apartment too?
Love the first one, very smoldering! I like the beard, reckon you should hang onto it for a while.
Hot! Both vest and beard.
Now where did I leave the Pokon for my own?
i like it!
and you have such nice eyes.
OH.MY.GAWD.
*blushing&stammering*
keep the beard, sugar.
(is it possible to have an 8″x10″ sent to me for my birthday – the first pic, please)
townygirl – he must have a beautiful beard so
travelling – but it’s a beatiful vest hehe ah well, thanks anyways
gimme – I am – I’m willing it to grow
caro – ah thanks. I have to say I love my apartment too. Nothing like living in a loft!
yvonne – I think I will, at least for another wee while
hidh – blush! Thanks. Where do you leave your what now?
laurie – you’re so sweet, thanks
savannah – hehe could you imagine the shock if I did!
right, will put cat amongst the pigeons…hate the beard! Oh, decisions, decisions…
DeaFulgora – well I commend your bravery hehe perhaps this will encourage more of the same opinion
Ah, turns out Pokon is a Dutch brand. It is liquid fertilizer for pot plants.
My hubby has a similar growth, except very patchy (an Indian beard (apache) ha ha) yours does not look too bad, keep it going and send more pics, then we can all make a more informed decision!!! Although i have to say that I THINK you look good with stubble but a full on beard will not be so good….will have to wait and see…okay I’m going now!!!
Just keep it short, real short because now you resemble my favourite: Dr. House (http://bkwriter.blogspot.com/2006/03/character-study-greg-house.html; Hugh Laurie). As for the sideburns, just let your hair grow a little longer? Oh yeah, and i’m all for the vest.
Good luck!
Awh, cute.
*has been far too afraid to take a picture of himself for some time*
ok, there is that possibility, sugar, but i think i want the 2nd pic because it reminds me of david niven and i feel less like a cougar!
I was gonna say Hugh Laurie myself actually!
hidh – and it turns out I even have some in house – will try it on the beard later
natalie – well I certainly wasn’t thinking of going all santa claus on it hehe
aeros – I think I’m going to have to check out this Dr House, he’s obviously a man of class
robert – hehe damn right I was
savannah – really? I’m not sure that’s much of a compliment though, although at least he’s a real human which makes a nice change
xbox4nappyrash – not sure I’m happy about this one either although again, it’s a step up from a hobbit
Bah, that’s not so bad! If you wanna see patchy I’ll have to take photos of my husband’s facial hair, it’ll make you feel like that dude who was married to Carla on Cheers.
The beard’s grand. Doesn’t work with the sports-bra though.
Don’t you pay any heed to these detractors.
The beard is great. The vest is great.
You look rough. You look tough. And when the going gets tough… ok, I’m off to be Billy Ocean for the day.
You do have some “Chris Cornell’s younger brother” action going on.
For me, growing the beard out just past where it’s horrifically itchy was a point of no return. No way was I going through that again. So I say leave it for now and see how it suits you in a couple of weeks.
You’re a bit of a sexy minx there Conor, aren’t ya!?
That guy who told you you’d look good with a beard was sooooo right. Very sexy indeed.
As for nobody in your real life noticing your facial hair I recommend a French film called ‘La Moustache’ -fabulous stuff.
Ooooh, Alan, you’re right. Minx is the word! It’s perfect. I shall call him Minx henceforth.
I have to confess that I do like the beard. The sort of pre-beardy beard is probably the best kind. It’s when it gets all thick and bristly and congregates on the neck that I start to have issues.
Great pictures!
Photos or it…
Oh, hang on.
It works very well indeed. But not much longer than you have it. Think Euro-moody rather than Aran Islands poet.
I think you should use your blog to make all decisions from now on.
eh yeah what is with the eyes? and keep the beard, looks good………..
Oooh – much cuteness. Definitely keep it
Wow, I chose a good day to come and visit your blog, didn’t I?
I love it. Mind, I have a thing for patchy beards, being as my lust-object is Johnny Depp. Still, can’t be bad being compared to him, can it?
Seriously, I think it looks great on you, and not actually that patchy! Keep it! But as Aeros said, keep it short. It’s much sexier that way.
You have excellent stubble…work it!!
briegh – so long as it’s not Norm
primal – without might have been just a touch scarier though
jovica – you’re a little bit Billy Ocean every day
ann – thanks! I won’t let it get too bushy I promise
enda – I know, can you believe I finally did it!!! I love the idea of having my decisions made for me…
manuel – I think I must have had too much coffee that day
jen – thanks a mill, you’re sweet
jay – finally someone decent to be compared too. I love it!
emmak – It’s official, tough Conortje is here to stay!
Eli – I haven’t been too bothere by itchiness so far – it does feel kind of weird though. in a good way.
alan – minx? really?
red – who would have thought he’s end up being right. Strange stuff indeed. Thanks for the film recommendation!
There’s always a moment of nervous doubt midway through growing a beard, but it’s always a good idea to persevere. You can decide if you like it or not when it’s fully grown. If you remove it now, you won’t know.
